Planning for College & Career Readiness
The Indian Hills counselors will be providing a course with College & Career Readiness information for every 8th grade student. In this course, we will be going over your student's 4-year high school plan, post-high school college and career options, as well as individual concerns and celebrations.
In order to provide a more individualized meeting, please review the general information below prior to attending your student's PCCR meeting. This should allow more time for specific questions and individual planning with your student!

*NEW* Opportunity Scholarship
New legislation passed during the 2021 session created a simplified, statewide, achievement-based scholarship—the Opportunity Scholarship. The Opportunity Scholarship will be available to students beginning with the high school graduating class of 2022.
What are the new Opportunity Scholarship requirements?
These requirements were created after examining data from the last five years of Utah high school graduates to identify the top predictors of college success.
Awards will be determined based on available funding and the number of qualified applicants. Individual awards may be used toward the cost of tuition and fees after other state aid is applied. Eligible institutions include Dixie State University, Salt Lake Community College, Snow College, Utah State University, Utah Valley University, University of Utah, Weber State University, Brigham Young University (Provo), Ensign College, Westminster College, Western Governors University. (Students who plan to attend a technical college within the Utah System of Higher Education can defer use of the Opportunity Scholarship before transferring to an eligible institution listed here. We recommend these students also consider applying for the Technical Education Scholarship through the institution directly.)
For more information and a list of qualifying courses, please visit opportunityscholarship.org.

Tips for Scholarship Searches
Scholarship Checklist:
- Determine what kind of scholarship you want to search for: academic merit (ACT/GPA), departmental, leadership, diversity, talent (music, art, athletic, dance), service, etc.
- Start with a Google keyword search for your talents. Try many different combinations:
- “Scholarship + your talent” (example: “scholarship + theater arts”)
- “Scholarship + your talent + college you’re interested in” (example: “scholarship + video games + Utah State University”)
Finding Scholarships
- The best place to begin your search for scholarships is with the college(s) you plan to attend. Check the college’s financial aid website for more information.
- High School counseling centers are another excellent source for researching available scholarships.
- Keep in mind that deadlines are NOT flexible.
- Some scholarships may require you to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), so be sure to complete it.
- Beware of scholarship scams! Never, ever pay a fee to apply for a scholarship.
